Confessions of a Liberty County Native
Some of our Liberty County residents have been here less than 5 years, while others have been here their whole lives enjoying our parks, exploring our museums and visiting our local businesses. We interviewed three long-time residents of Liberty County to ask them what visitors—and residents—should experience in our coastal community!

What is your favorite part about Liberty County? By far, my favorite part is the proximity to the water. I love the marsh, rivers, St. Catherine’s Island and the wildlife that inhabit our waterways. I can sit on my back porch and watch dolphins & see my favorite birds: Roseate Spoonbills! A couple of years ago I had a manatee hanging out around my dock. It’s almost like being on vacation every day!
What places around Liberty County do you like to visit in your free time? I spend the vast majority of my free time on my boat in the river. There are endless creeks to explore and every outing is a new adventure!
What do you suggest for visitors/residents of Liberty County to do here? The Liberty Trail is a must for visitors and residents. Even after living here my entire life and visiting both many times, I find the historic Midway and Sunbury Cemetery fascinating. So many that move here, especially military, are unaware of how close we are to beaches and how easy it is to rent a boat (with boating experience of course) through MWR, launch at Halfmoon Marina and spend a weekend exploring our rivers or hanging out on the beach at St. Catherine’s Island.
What’s one word you would use to describe Liberty County? Paradise.

What places around Liberty County do you like to visit in your free time? I like to visit the coast mostly, out at Sunbury Marina! I also like to visit the Historic Dorchester Academy, Jones Creek Park and Fort Morris.
What do you suggest for visitors/residents of Liberty County to do here? Attend our many festivals like our Blues, Brews & BBQ or RiceFest! I also suggest people visit our historic sites, our farmers market, our local seafood eateries and support our local high school sporting events. Fort Stewart’s Warrior’s Walk and our Veterans Memorial Walk are great things to visit. The Illuminated Christmas Parade is a must-do!!
