I Need Science to Make Robot Maids Happen

cleaningI loathe housework. I do housework simply because I like to live in a clean house. Last weekend I had some guests stay with me. They came all the way from Japan, and it’s the first time they’ve been in the States in 2 years, and the first time we’ve seen each other in 10 years. It was great playing hostess, but it was a ton of work leading up to it.

Here’s the rundown of what I had to do before they arrived: mop and vacuum the floors, dust all the furniture, clean the bathrooms, do the laundry, set out clean towels and linens, and make sure I had meals and snacks ready. Because I procrastinate like crazy for things I hate, I didn’t actually start cleaning until the morning of the day they were arriving. I worked in 40-minute spurts with 10-minute breaks. Oh, did I mention I had to go food shopping that morning too? I was seriously freaking out because I wasn’t sure I’d be able to get all of it done in time. Somehow, I made it happen. Ok, a bunch of junk got shoved in my closet but hey, I’m pretty sure I performed a housecleaning miracle. Guess what? As soon as they left, I had to start the process all over; washing linens and towels, doing the dishes, etc. By the way, it was totally worth it because they had a great time, and I know they appreciated having a clean place to stay.

Rosie from the JetsonsWhat I want to know is, where are the robot maids? I thought science would’ve figured this out by now. Does anybody remember the cartoon, “The Jetsons?” The Jetsons had a robot maid. Her name was Rosie, and she did all the household chores. Honestly, what was there for this family to complain about when they never had to clean up after themselves? I watched that show as a kid and even then, I thought a robot maid was genius. I feel like TV made some sort of futuristic promise that wasn’t fulfilled.

Having a robot maid is an idea I’ve been obsessed with for several years. Recently, my husband sent me a video of a laundry-folding machine. Yeah, seriously, click this link and watch the video. This thing looks amazing, but it’s still not up to my standard. I need a robot to put the laundry away after it’s folded too. Otherwise, it’ll sit in my laundry basket for two weeks while I rifle through it every time I need a new outfit. So only half my problem is solved there. I’m also seriously considering purchasing a Roomba for my birthday this year. This thing will vacuum while you’re away from your house! Also, I’ve seen videos of it entertaining pets and kids (just by vacuuming), so you know this is something amazing.

Housework is really an issue that needs to be addressed. I know I’m not alone in my cleaningdistaste for housework, otherwise why would there be so many memes about it on Pinterest? Pinterest also has lots of pins dedicated to cleaning schedules and tips to clean faster and more efficiently. You know what would be really helpful? If some of these folks who come up with this stuff could just come over and clean my house as a “demonstration.”

Now I know you might think I should just hire someone to clean my house, and I have done that. It was fantastic. Some of the best money I ever spent. However, I feel I need round-the-clock cleaning, and that’s just not going to be affordable for me in human form.

So please science, I need this in my lifetime. I think I would give up vacations for the rest of my life if I could have a robot maid. It’s either a robot maid or I’m hoping magic is for real and Mary Poppins will fly in my window to start tidying up. A girl can dream!
