Cheers to New Beer’s Eve in Liberty County
April 7 is National Beer Day, and many people get together to “crack open a cold one” in celebration. The holiday was created back in 1933 to celebrate the end of Prohibition. However, you may not realize that the celebration begins the day before, on April 6, with New Beer’s Eve!
Brief History
According to the Mob Museum, National Museum of Organized Crime & Law Enforcement, 18 days after becoming president in 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed Congress, saying: “I recommend to the Congress the passage of legislation for the immediate modification of the Volstead Act, to legalize the manufacture and sale of beer and other beverages of such alcoholic content as is permissible under the Constitution…” The new law made it legal to make, sell and distribute beer with no more than 3.2% alcohol.
In Chicago, WGN Radio broadcast special programming onsite at Atlas Brewing Company as it got ready to deploy a fleet of trucks filled with kegs and bottles of beer for the first time in 13 years. Thus, New Beer’s Eve was established as an official pre-holiday celebration.
