Keep Liberty Beautiful: Let’s Recycle

Reduce, reuse and recycle are words most of us have heard many times over the years. We are taught from a very young age the importance of “going green” by reducing how much trash we produce and learning to purchase reusable things vs. one-time-use plastics. This week we wanted to talk about recycling, more specifically what can be recycled and where you can dispose of it.

Now, we can’t start this conversation without first talking about Keep Liberty Beautiful (KLB).  They’re a program driven by community volunteers who strive to keep our community free from litter and provide education on ways to care for our environment. KLB also has several programs that focus on recycling and we want to just highlight a few of them.

  • Bring One for the Chipper – After Christmas, you can drop off your live Christmas tree (free of any lights and décor) at the Liberty County Health Department. Every January, KLB and their partners put the old trees into a wood chipper to create fresh mulch!
  • Annual Earth Day Celebration – This family-friendly event is geared towards teaching youth all about recycling, water conservation, litter prevention and more, in fun interactive ways.

Cigarette Litter Prevention Initiatives

KLB conducts several cigarette butt scans throughout the year. The purpose of this is to monitor the amount of cigarette butt litter in an area and educate the public on ways to properly discard them. As part of this year-long campaign, KLB offers free cigarette receptacles to businesses in Liberty County. They accomplish this due to strategic partnerships with larger initiatives such as Georgia’s Coast is Not an Ashtray. This larger initiative’s mission is to educate all of Coastal Georgia about the impact smoking waste has on our beaches and waterways.

Locally, KLB has installed several public cigarette receptacles at various places, such as bus stops and fishing piers. Once the receptacles are full, their contents are mailed off for recycling! Those discarded tobacco products are cleaned and turned into various items like watering cans and park benches. For more information about the cigarette litter prevention initiatives, be sure to call Keep Liberty Beautiful at 912.880.4888.

Where to Discard Recycling

Liberty County has multiple locations throughout the community where citizens can discard their recycling and large trash items (such as an old couch). For more info on the county’s Solid Waste department, check out their website.

Keep Liberty Beautiful also hosts quarterly Recycle It! Fairs. These fairs are a great way for residents to get rid of recyclable, household items collected over time, like old books and clothes, medications or used motor oil.

Here is a list of items KLB accepts at their fairs:

  • Old computers
  • Printers
  • Computer monitors
  • Televisions
  • Household paint (half full & sealed in the can with no rust)
  • Cell phones
  • Used motor oil
  • Household batteries
  • Ink/toner cartridges
  • Books
  • Gently used clothing and shoes
  • Compact Fluorescent Lamps (energy-saving bulbs) and LED Bulbs
  • Prescription and over-the-counter medications (no hypodermic needles)

Special Note: Twice a year KLB also hosts a Shred Day event in conjunction with their Recycle It! Fairs. This is a great opportunity to get rid of those documents you can’t just toss in the trash.
