Making Salsa with Farmers Market Produce

March is finally here and the weather outside is starting to warm up! Now that we have sunshine again you may also start to notice an increased sighting of roadside stands advertising fresh produce. Starting this week the Hinesville Downtown Development Authority’s Farmers Market will be open every Thursday 3-7pm in Bradwell Park until October 17th. One of our favorite things to make with our haul is salsa! In this blog, we are giving you not one but two easy-to-follow salsa recipes.

Simple Salsa

Ingredients list

1 large onion (Vidalia preferred)
Tomatoes (we used Roma)

Bell Pepper (one large)
Jalapeno (1 seeded)
Limes (2 juiced)
Garlic (2 fresh cloves)
Salt & Black Pepper
Red Pepper
Fresh Cilantro

Simple Salsa Recipe

  • The first step is to wash all of your veggies.
  • Next, you need to chop all veggies into bite-size pieces.

Pro Tip: For a less spicy salsa, remove the seeds from your jalapeños.

  • After that, you need to remove the cilantro leaves from the stalks and peel and chop your garlic.
  • Now, into your food processor toss your veggies, cilantro, garlic and lime juice. Next, you will want to give everything a good mix. For a chunky salsa, we recommend you set your processor to pulse.
  • Lastly, empty your food processor into a mixing bowl and mix in red pepper, salt and black pepper to your taste.

Southwest Salsa

Ingredients list

1 large onion (Vidalia preferred)
Tomatoes (we used Roma)

Bell Pepper (one large)
Limes (2 juiced)
Garlic (1 fresh clove)
Salt & Pepper
Fresh Cilantro
Silver Queen Corn (1 ear steamed & removed from cob)
1 can of black beans

Southwest Salsa Recipe

  • First you need to wash, shuck, steam and remove your Silver Queen Corn from the cob.
  • Next, drain and rinse your black beans and set them off to the side.
  • Now, wash all of your other veggies and chop them into bite-size pieces.
  • After that, remove the cilantro leaves from stalks and peel and chop your garlic.
  • Then, toss your veggies. cilantro, garlic and lime juice into your food processor and give it a good blend. We recommend making this a chunky salsa by setting your food processor to pulse.
  • Next, empty your food processor into a mixing bowl and mix in your black beans and corn.
  • Finally, season your salsa to taste using salt and pepper.

Salsa Pro Tips

  • According to NY Times, it is best to let your salsa chill in the fridge for about 15 minutes. The time spent in the fridge will allow the delicious flavors of your fresh ingredients to intensify.
  • If you’re looking to elevate your salsa a little more all you have to do is add avocado or mango. Trust us…it’s delicious
  • If you want to make the recipe a bit more challenging, we suggest using a mortar and pestle vs a food processor. The extra bit of labor will be well worth it in the end.
