Discover Liberty County’s 8 Hidden Gems
Liberty County is rich with hidden gems, from sites steeped in history to unforgettable dining experiences. We could spend days uncovering all it has to offer, but we’ve selected a few of our top favorites to help you start exploring the very best of Liberty County.
Eve Park
Y’all won’t want to miss a visit to Eve Park. Here you can take a peaceful stroll while soaking in the beautiful coastal views. You can also cook for the family on their charcoal grill while the kids enjoy the playground. When it’s time to eat, sit down at one of their picnic tables and watch the boats go in and out of Halfmoon Marina.
St. Catherines Island
St. Catherines Island is privately owned and known for its rich history, wildlife conservation and beautiful beaches. The island is owned by the St. Catherines Island Foundation and serves as a center for ecological research and the preservation of endangered species. Although the island’s interior is not accessible to the public, you can visit the island’s beaches by boat ride during daylight hours. When you visit, you will find a perfect spot to unwind, take a deep breath and listen to the gentle waves.
Historic Baptismal Trail
One of Liberty County’s most meaningful hidden gems is the Historic Baptismal Trail. This trail holds deep roots in local history and faith. Written and oral histories from members of the First African Baptist Church say the site was used as early as the 1840s for Christian baptisms for people who were enslaved. It remains a deeply spiritual place, and we highly recommend you stop here to experience the beauty and history of Liberty County.
Dorchester Academy
Dorchester Academy was founded in 1871 by the American Missionary Association, now known as the United Church of Christ. It was originally formed to educate formerly enslaved people but by 1917, it had grown into a fully accredited high school with more than 300 students. Now what makes Dorchester Academy so unique? Martin Luther King Jr. was a frequent guest and even prepared for the infamous Birmingham March here. Today, it is a designated national historic landmark that serves as an African American history museum and community hub.

Two Signers of the Declaration of Independence are from Liberty County
Did you know that two signers of the Declaration of Independence were from right here in Liberty County? Both Lyman Hall and Button Gwinnett had deep roots in the area. Originally from Connecticut, Lyman Hall moved to Georgia and served as the state’s governor from 1783 to 1784. Button Gwinnett, born in England, arrived in Georgia in 1764 and soon purchased St. Catherines Island. Both of these men helped shape the nation’s history, and we are proud that they are a part of Liberty County’s legacy.
Fort Morris
Today, visitors can stand within the original earthwork remains and view the scenic Saint Catherines Sound at Fort Morris. The museum highlights civilian and military life across Georgia’s colonial, revolutionary and antebellum eras. If you are lucky enough to visit during a special event, Fort Morris even holds reenactments to bring the fort to life with roaring cannons and the measured tread of marching soldiers. Fort Morris is part of Georgia’s Colonial Coast Birding Trail, so while you’re there, grab some binoculars and a field guide to explore the area.
The Midway Church
Built in 1792, the Midway Church replaced the original 1756 meetinghouse, which the British destroyed during the Revolutionary War. The church was built in a New England style and painted red to prevent decay but was later repainted white. In 1849, the church was reoriented, and in the 1950s, it was moved 40 feet east when Highway 17 was expanded.
