History
The Historic Baptismal Trail served as a holy site for nearly 100 years, it was the place where the local Gullah Geechee communities baptized new members into their faith. Baptisms in the body of water, known as the “baptismal pool,” began as early as the 1840s. The location was likely chosen for its proximity to a well-known fishing and swimming spot called Round Hole.
Christian baptisms at this site were conducted by members of the North Newport Church. In 1854, a portion of the congregation relocated to Walthourville. The church was renamed the First African Baptist Church after this move. The congregation continued to use the trail for baptisms until the 1940s.
The history of this site is derived from both oral and written records maintained by the surviving descendants of the First African Baptist Church. As they made their way from the church down the trail for baptisms, the congregation would prepare for the ritual by singing hymns.
Historic Baptismal Trail
The Historic Baptismal Trail is a serene walk for visitors. It is complete with a boardwalk, benches and picnic tables. Interpretive signage is located throughout the site, providing a look into both the surrounding natural habitat and the historical significance of the area.
A lookout tower along the boardwalk allows visitors to enjoy a broad view of the surroundings. The trail is open for self-guided tours Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm, and on weekends from 9am to 5pm.
