Liberty County Tree Spirit Guide

Hot summer days will be here before we know it. This makes it the perfect time to pack your whole family in the car to enjoy some quality time together… in the air conditioner! One of our favorite pastimes here in Liberty County is sitting back, relaxing and taking the road less traveled. This normally means finding a beautiful dirt road and cruising along to see what you can spot while enjoying the scenery. One of our favorites is Barrington Ferry Road in Riceboro, and if y’all drive out there, you will understand why.

A Little Bit About the Tree Spirits

Over the years, there have been mysterious “tree spirits” that have popped up along the road. These tree spirits are faces that someone carves into the big, old live oak trees. Each face is different and unique which makes searching for them that much more fun. The person who carves these majestic faces has revealed their identity to us, but in our opinion keeping him or her a mystery is all part of the fun.

For the sake of argument “he” said he lets the tree tell the story of its spirit, and this is how the face is chosen. There is an immense amount of detail in every one that makes them all unique and gives them their own personality. The tree spirits can be easily missed if you do not pay attention, so keep your eyes open wide! We think that they are truly something that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy. We went out and dropped a pin at each of them to make them even easier to find.

To our surprise, we even found some new ones that we had not seen before. This brought our total up to five! Three of them are on the right-hand side as you go down Barrington Ferry and two are on your right-hand side as you are coming back up the road towards the pavement!

Play a fun little game and create a story for each of the different faces, and if you take any photos while you are hunting – make sure you use the #ExploreLiberty hashtag for a chance to be featured on our social media.
