St. Catherines Island

St. Catherines is Liberty County’s barrier island. It is a private island and accessible only by boat. The history of St. Catherines Island is varied and interesting, as it has been home not only to the Spanish Mission Santa Catalina de Guale in 1587, but also to many endangered species, including ring-tailed lemurs that still live freely on the island today. In fact, the island is one of two places other than Madagascar where ring-tailed lemurs live outside of captivity.

St. Catherines offers its visitors a calm beach escape, free from the stress of large crowds or lengthy drives, however, it is only accessible by boat. The beach is the perfect place to experience a sunrise or sunset, have a picnic or go fishing with friends and family. St. Catherines also provides a unique educational experience for its visitors, as the surrounding waters and island are home to coastal Georgia’s diverse flora and fauna.

Walthourville is home to one of Georgia’s most remarkable stories of civic leadership. In 1974, the city gained statewide recognition when one of Georgia’s first all-female municipal governments took office, creating a legacy that continues to inspire today.

Few communities can claim a place in history quite like Walthourville. Located in western Liberty County, this small city earned statewide recognition in 1974 when then-Governor Jimmy Carter appointed one of Georgia’s first all-female municipal governments, creating a legacy of leadership that continues to inspire visitors today.

Led by Mayor Lyndol Anderson and a council of pioneering women, Walthourville’s first city government focused on improving residents’ quality of life while establishing a strong foundation for the newly incorporated community. Mayor Anderson graciously donated her monthly salary back to the city while prioritizing essential improvements, including access to running water. Visitors can learn more about this remarkable chapter of Georgia history through the city’s historic marker, which proudly bears the phrase, “organized by women, supported by men.”

Today, Walthourville offers visitors an opportunity to experience the rich history, enduring heritage and strong community spirit that has shaped Liberty County for generations.

Home to the legendary 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart is the heart of Liberty County and one of the most important military installations in the United States. As the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River, the installation spans more than 279,000 acres across Liberty, Bryan, Long and Tattnall counties and has played a vital role in our community since its establishment in 1940. The 3rd Infantry Division Museum showcases the division’s distinguished service from World War I to present-day operations through exhibits, artifacts, military vehicles and interactive displays. Just outside the museum, Warriors Walk stands as a living memorial honoring the soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division and attached units who gave their lives in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
