Take a walk along the same path that members of the First African Baptist Church traveled in the 1840s at the Historic Baptismal Trail in Riceboro. This was an active holy place for over 100 years and was used by members of the Gullah Geechee culture to baptize new members into the Christian faith.

Located in Midway, you will find Dorchester Academy! This site is 1 of only 11 stops in Georgia along the U.S. Civil Rights Trail. It was founded in 1871 by the American Missionary Association as a school for freed slaves and later became an institute for community development and political and social change. Interested in spending some time in the same place as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. Ralph Abernathy, Andrew Young and Dr. Fred Shuttlesworth? Make an appointment to visit!

Pro Tip: If you’re visiting in February, stop by our local art gallery, the Hinesville Area Arts Council and check out the Black History Month Exhibit! It is done every year and it’s always amazing.
