9 Spots to Cast a Line in Liberty County
With stunning coastal scenery and miles of waterways, Liberty County is a hidden gem for fans of fishing. Whether you’re a pro or a beginner, there are plenty of places to cast a line and enjoy a day on the water. We’ve compiled a list of 9 of our favorite fishing spots that are filled with diverse fish species. Check ‘em out below, and don’t forget to bring your bait and tackle!
1. Bryant Commons
438 W. Oglethorpe Hwy., Hinesville
Located in the heart of Hinesville, Bryant Commons is the perfect place to fish and escape the business of town. The large pond is well-maintained and includes a fishing dock. Species of fish found here include bass, bream and catfish, however, the pond is catch and release only. The area is ideal for families, offering lots to do with its walking trails, Independent Telecommunications Pioneer Association National Telephone Museum, Cisco’s Dog Park and a playground. After fishing, enjoy a picnic with the family or just enjoy lounging under the live oaks.
2.Cay Creek Wetlands Interpretive Center
189 Charlie Butler Road, Midway
Cay Creek is a must-visit for fishing fanatics and nature lovers alike. This creek offers a unique fishing site and its brackish waters are home to a variety of fish: including redfish, flounder and speckled trout. The boardwalk and observation platforms provide easy access to the creek. If you get tired of fishing or want to appreciate the wildlife, this is an excellent place to relax and take in the serenity of the peaceful inland creeks of Liberty County.
3. Jones Creek Park
2059 Isle of Wight Road, Midway
This hidden gem on Isle of Wight is a local favorite for its tranquil setting, public ramp for small boats, playground, sheltered seating and the abundance of fish. The creek is a good place to catch bass and enjoy time with family and friends. Be sure to stay until sunset because it offers a chance to a see a beautiful view.
4. Riceboro Fishing Area
Hwy. 17 outside of the City of Riceboro
The abandoned bridge on Hwy. 17 on the outskirts of Riceboro makes a great fishing pier. Located on Peacock Canal, there is a small pavilion with picnic tables, so you can take a break from fishing and enjoy a snack. You’re also likely to see some beautiful birds in this spot as it’s very close to marshy wetlands and a peaceful wooded area.
5. Riceboro Dock
On Interstate Paper Road in Riceboro off Hwy. 17
Also located in Riceboro is a peaceful and productive fishing spot nestled in a more secluded area. Here you’ll find a boat ramp that’s perfect for boats, canoes and kayaks alike. You’re likely to catch bass and bluegills while surrounded by expansive marshes and sparkling blue waters. Pro Tip: There is no covered pavilion at this dock so on hot days we recommend bringing a hat or an umbrella for shade and cold beverages to stay hydrated and cool.
6. Sunbury Fishing Pier
3320 Ft. Morris Road, Midway
Located in Sunbury, you’ll find a large pier for fishing and a public landing for direct access to our intracoastal waterway. The pier is a great spot to catch redfish, trout and black drum. If you get tired of fishing, Sunbury Crab Company offers fresh, local seafood just a moment away. Pro Tip: The Sunbury Fishing Pier is largely unused on weekdays so you may even get a chance to have the place to yourself.
7. Eve Park/Halfmoon Marina
234 Azalea Road, Midway
A well-known spot amongst local anglers, Eve Park is situated along the bluff of the South Newport River on Colonel’s Island. You’re likely to catch speckled trout and flounder in the deep river waters. This spot is perfect for families and offers a playground for kids, screened in picnic tables and convenient docking facilities. Pro Tip: Take a moment to check out the recently renovated marina bait shop, which offers food, drinks and t-shirts.
Dorchester Shooting Preserve

Primarily known for its hunting facilities, Dorchester Shooting Preserve, off of Exit 76 on I-95, offers more than excellent bird and deer hunting. Located within the preserve are many stocked ponds that offer a more private fishing experience away from the crowds. The preserve also offers saltwater and freshwater adventures and provides chartering services for fishing excursions which include unique itineraries with one of the Preserve’s captains. 9. St. Catherines Island
Accessible only via Boat
Unlike the other spots on our list, St. Catherines is only accessible via boat. However, the island’s scenery makes it worth the extra effort to get there. The water around the island is full of a wide array of fish species, such as redfish, tarpon and even sharks. After fishing, anchor anywhere on the beach and soak in the sun, or perhaps picnic and relax amongst the driftwood and palms. The remote island’s natural beauty and open waters will surely have you wanting to come back.
Before you go fishing in Liberty County, make sure you’re properly licensed. Check the Georgia Department of National Resources website and click on licenses and permits to see everything you need before a fun day of fishing.
