American Independence
Download Itinerary (PDF)It should come as no surprise that Liberty County is filled with history as it was established in 1777. If you have an interest in Colonial history and the American Revolutionary War, you are in luck here! You can start your day off by visiting the Midway Museum which is a reproduction of an 18th century plantation cottage and is filled with artifacts and heirlooms!
Just next door to the museum you will find the Midway Congregational Church which dates back to 1792. The original meetinghouse of Midway was burned down by the British during the Revolutionary War. Across the street is a cemetery, the resting grounds for the church and here you will find two Revolutionary War generals among the many residents of that era.
As you head towards the coast be sure to stop in at the The Smokin’ Pig for your midday meal. A local favorite, this restaurant boasts a hearty menu with a nice variety of homemade fixings to pair with your mouthwatering BBQ!
As you make it to the coastline you will discover living history at Fort Morris Historic Site. The fort served as a means of protection to its neighbor, Sunbury, which was a booming port town. The fort managed to ward off the British for a little while but eventually fell to the Redcoat troops. The fort now offers a museum, gift shop, 1-mile walking trail and even reenactment events throughout the year to keep the history alive.
After learning about Sunbury and its shared history with Fort Morris, be sure to drive through the peaceful coastal hideaway and explore the Sunbury Cemetery. One of the oldest cemeteries in Liberty County, you will find headstones dating back to as early as 1788.
If you’re feeling adventurous, take Old Sunbury Road back to the highway. One of the oldest roads around, the overhanging oaks dripping in Spanish moss make for an enchanting drive!
